ENVIRONMENTALISTS have co=
ndemned
a mega-marine proposal, saying it would “change the face” of Beaumaris forever.
The =
Beaumaris
Motor Yacht Squadron has developed an ambitious $21 million concept plan to
create a 116-berth safe harbour at its foreshore
home. It would incorporate a three-level, 108-boat dry stacking area, a
double-storey car park and a new clubhouse.
Beau=
maris Conservation Society spokesman Ge=
offrey
Goode said the expansion would “ruin the charm” of the beautiful
locale.
“It is an important=
area
for its natural features; this would make it look like an industrial area a=
nd
unquestionably degrade it for the community,” Mr=
Goode said.
“This proposal has =
the
potential to change the face of Beaumaris, incl=
uding
the look of its famous and loved seascape and shoreline perhaps more than a=
ny
other single proposed development in recent times.
“There is also the =
likely
serious intrusion upon the internationally significant fossil site, which i=
s a
public park and recreation zone.”
Squadron commodore Peter =
Barnes
said the project was in its early stages and would need to be ratified by t=
he
club’s members before proceeding.
“It is something th=
at is up
for discussion,” Mr Barnes said.
“There is still a l=
ot of work
to be done, but no, it won’t endanger the environment.”
Money for the project wou=
ld be
raised from the sales of berths, costing between $95,000 and $340,000 each,=
and
dry stands, retailing at $55,000 each.
Bayside Council sustainab=
ility
group manager Michael Top said no application had yet been received.
There may be environmental
concerns, including the area being home to significant fossils and cliff
formations, Mr Top said.
“Should (the squadr=
on)
prepare a planning application it will be considered by council,” he
said.
