Report 1986 THREAT T0 THE BEAUMARIS CLIFF &
THE ADJACENT SEABED In early 1986 the Beaumaris Motor Yacht Squadron and the nearby owners of the ''Keefer's boatshed" operation were each asking the Victorian Government to approve their expansion plans. These included filling over seabed in front of and right up to the Cliff. BCS's campaign to save the renowned, fossil-rich scenic Cliff proved successful when the Planning & Environment Minister, Hon. James Kennan MLC, declined to approve the proposal because of the importance of the Cliff and the sea beside it. Application to the Australian Heritage Commission for inclusion of the Cliff on the Register of the National Estate is underway. BICYCLE TRACK ON THE FORESHORE GRASS
VERGE ALONG This proposal was mentioned in last
year's President's Report. At our request, the Port Phillip
Conservation Council wrote to the Sandringham
Council Engineer giving reasons why there should be no further
reduction in the vegetated area between HEATHLAND Maintenance of the Gramatan Avenue Heathland Sanctuary has continued even though a disappointingly small number of BCS members have been attending. Sandringham Council assisted us by sawing off a number of old, dead tea tree stumps that were unsightly. By next year our emphasis should change to the scrupulous removal of low weeds and possibly the defining of pathways so that scheduled visits can be promoted. Our Honorary Secretary, Mr Ken Rendell, has kept the BCS Committee informed on the progress of the High School Heathland Area. As instructed by the 1985 Annual
General meeting, the Committee wrote to the Local Government Minister
opposing proposals to amalgamate the City of Parliamentarians Al1 the local State MPs; Mr David Lea MLA, Hon. Geoffrey Connard MLC and Hon. Robert Lawson MLC; have been helpful to us. We have not had occasion to approach the Federal MHR, Mr David Charles, or any of the twelve Victorian senators. MEMBERSHIP Membership numbers have remained stable but are still too low. Extra members should be sought by existing members inviting people to join. We continue to be a member body of (i) Port Phillip Conservation Council, (ii) Conservation Council of Victoria and (iii) Australian Conservation Foundation. Geoffrey Goode President
