President’s Report 1987

BOATSHED DEVELOPMENT IN FRONT OF BEAUMARIS CLIFF

Last year the Society successfully urged the State Government not to approve expansion plans by the Beaumaris Motor Yacht Squadron and separately by Boat Haven Marine Pty. Ltd. (the successors to the Keefer's 1905 Jetty Licence) in front of the Beaumaris Cliff.

Sandringham Council has now endorsed a modified proposal. Its fate is to be decided by the Ministry for Planning and Environment after the deadline for receipt of public submissions, which is third September 1987. It is hoped members will make submissions. The attached draft submission by the PPCC gives the address and other relevant details. Sandringham Council has proposed a 15-year lease to replace the existing annual licence, which dates from 1905. BCS asks that there be neither licence nor lease and certainly no buildings or other development.

SHELLFISH SIGNS

The Government has creditably erected a number of multilingual signs warning visitors to the coast of the prohibition of removal of shellfish and the $500 penalty. Because of the shortage of Government inspectors, shellfish loss will orly be adequately minimized if offenders are approached by any of us that see them, and the position put to them clearly and pleasantly, then and there. Mention of the multilingual signs, and pointing out where they are, helps greatly in convincing offenders.

TABLE ROCK'S LANDMARK TEA TREE

The mindless destruction or this large, old tea tree is deplored. Sandringham Council's large reward for information leading to a conviction and its planting and fencing of prospective successors is commendable. The interesting and unobtrusive nature walk signs they have placed between Table Rock and Quiet Corner are also appreciated.

SANDRINGHAM COAST MANAGEMENT PLAN

We understand that proposals made in the light of public submissions will be subject to public debate before they are adopted with or without modifications arising from that debate.

HEATHLAND SANCTUARY

The Society produced a brochure on the newly-established Nature Walk in the Gramatan Avenue Heathland Sanctuary and, with assistance from Sandringham Council and the Ministry for Planning and Environment, conducted a wellattended Public Inspection there for World Environment Day. Maintenance of the Gramatan Avenue Heathland Sanctuary has continued steadily.

PARLIAMENTARIANS & MUNICIPAL COUNCILLORS

Local State MPs, Mr David Lea HLA and the Hon. Geoffrey Connard MLC, have been helpful to us. The MHR for Isaacs, Mr David Charles, attended our last Annual General Meeting. Various Sandringham councillors, particularly Crs Bottomley, Moller and Reynolds have helped us.
